Last Week Today #2
This week has been a busy one. Between unpacking from our D.C. trip, cleaning, planning for our upcoming trip to Vietnam, and guests in town there hasn’t been a lot of down time. Plus, our Vegas Golden Knights, Las Vegas’ new NHL team, are in the Stanley Cup playoffs and the first round started on Wednesday.
No Sisterly Love
Let’s get this edition started with a big ole dogfight.
Nola Mae, our 6-year old beagle-basset mix, had her annual vet appointment last Monday. She’s such a healthy pup (unlike her sister, Olive) and she got a clean bill of health from our amazing vet, Dr. B at Pet Health Animal Hospital.* Flash forward a few hours, we’re playing with a new toy Drew and I bought in D.C., and Olive attacks Nola seemingly unprovoked.
It was so scary. I was screaming, yelling and crying. Drew was wrestling Olive off Nola and poor Nola was making the worst sounds I’ve ever heard. It sounded like pain, betrayal, fear, and anger all lumped together. Ugh, I’m tearing up just thinking about it.
Long story short, we get them separated and take Nola back to Dr. B’s office. Drew called on the way and Dr. B stayed open late for us to get Nola there. She had major chunks taken out of her ear, one that required three stitches, and some bites on her neck.
She’s doing better now; Dr. B cleaned out her wounds and put her on some muscle relaxants and antibiotics. Almost as soon as we got home the girls were back to being friends. Olive dedicated her week to licking Nola’s wounds—almost as if to apologize.
I honestly think Olive felt jealous and left out when we took Nola to the vet by herself. She has a sad history from her early days (abandoned and shot by her previous owners) and that has made her super codependent with a major case of separation anxiety. In the future, we will always take them places together, even to each other’s vet appointments.
Have your dogs ever fought one another enough to bring blood? What did you do?
Planning for Vietnam
Drew is our travel planner—usually. I’m the easy-to-please, documentarian co-pilot who makes recommendations along the way. We usually travel with points of interest in mind, but with no timeline to meet them. If we see a cute market in a village and we want to stop for a while, it’s totally fine. There are really no hard and firm agendas that we have to adhere to or reservations we have to make.
And while Drew is usually our planner, this time we’re giving our trip planning to someone else. Just like our trip to Peru, we’re heading out and trusting our travel plans to Gate 1. We loved our trip with Gate 1 and really appreciated the freedom to just sit back and relax, not worry about bad roads, confusing directions, or language barriers. Just enjoy. Negative side? You don’t really have the opportunity to “get off the beaten path,” people on your tour may annoy you, and you can only go as fast as your slowest group member.
However, the outings that Gate 1 plans are simply amazing. When we were in Peru, about six of us from the group visited a local family in their home and ate a delicious home-cooked meal. We loved seeing how people lived, what “home” looked like to them, and even though there was a language barrier, we all became fast friends. It was one of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had while traveling.
So, for our Vietnam trip, there isn’t much planning on where to go, though we do have some free afternoons and evenings that we’ll plan out.
I’ve been researching where we are going and planning out some of the shots I want to take. When you’re with a group, you might have limited time at each stop, so it’s important to know what you want to see when you arrive at your scheduled location.
Since Vietnam tends to be a more conservative culture, showing a lot of leg isn’t really appropriate. This isn’t really something that impacts me or the way I dress, but it’s good to keep in mind. My plan is to bring a lot of midi dresses (like this one, this one, and this one) and skirts—any breezy clothing made of cotton blends is perfect for the heat and humidity. I’m loving these wide-leg pants (as well as these, these, and these).
I’ve read that the mosquitos in Vietnam are quite the nuisance so I’m pulling out our bug spray and sunscreen (I love this Japanese sunscreen spray and this watery — not oily at all — sunscreen by Biore!).
Apart from the obvious street food, pho, and banh mi sandwiches that I can’t wait to eat in their birthplace, I am looking forward to a real Ca Phe Sua Da (iced coffee with sweetened, condensed milk). Ca phe means coffee and is pronounced just like coffee. Sua (or Nau in the North) means milk (which is sweetened, condensed milk). Da is ice.
To the Knights and local fans — who don’t normally gamble, but who pour into the Strip from the sprawling suburbs to root for their new team — this is just another normal night in the city they call home.

Golden Knights – Hoping For a #CupIn1
On Wednesday and Friday we had a blast watching our Golden Knights battle the LA Kings in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. (Then they beat the Kings on the road in LA for Game 3.)
Vegas’ opening theatrics are awesome. It’s Game of Thrones meets figure skating.
Yes, it’s over the top. Yes, it’s dramatic. And yeah, maybe it’s a little tacky. But those things are all so Vegas. This is what hockey in the desert looks like. This is the new Las Vegas. And I love it!
People are noticing how awesome the team and the game experience is, too:
The Knights haven’t even existed for a full season yet, and the expansion team plays in a historically transient city where families who have been here for more than one generation are scarce. But even though most locals come from elsewhere, the Knights are ranked fourth in the NHL in home attendance. They’re also mind-blowingly good.

So, I beg you. If you come to Vegas during hockey season, or are a local and haven’t seen a game yet, please go! You’ll fall in love with the team. And you’ll fall in love with my city.
