Books Are
Magic, Y'all

I’m a huge book nerd. In fact, I almost always have a book that I’m right in the middle of and I’m probably listening to an audiobook as well. When I travel, I’m always trying to cut down on how much I carry. Though I will always have a love for a good-smelling book made of paper, the Kindle is a definite must for travelers. If you know a book nerd —  or are one yourself — consider subscribing to Kindle Unlimited. I go am able to read so many new releases as well as old favorites because of Kindle Unlimited (you get access to over 1 million ebooks and thousands of audiobooks!).

Such a Fun Age

Such a Fun Age is a page-turning and big-hearted story about race and privilege, set around a young black babysitter, her well-intentioned employer, and a surprising connection that threatens to undo them both.

Alix Chamberlain is shocked when her babysitter, Emira Tucker, is confronted while watching her' toddler one night, walking the aisles of their local high-end supermarket. The store's security guard, seeing a young black woman out late with a white child, accuses Emira of kidnapping two-year-old Briar. A small crowd gathers, a bystander films everything, and Emira is furious and humiliated. Alix resolves to make things right.

With empathy and piercing social commentary, Such a Fun Age explores the stickiness of transactional relationships, what it means to make someone "family," and the complicated reality of being a grown up. It is a searing debut for our times.

I am a huge book nerd. In fact, I almost always have a book that I’m right in the middle of and I’m probably listening to an audio book as well.

Reading is definitely one of my favorite things to do when we’re traveling — flights go by so much faster with a good book to help you pass the time! And, I’m always trying to cut down on how much I carry around.

Though a true, “old school” bound book made of paper will always be my first choice, the Kindle is a definite must for travelers (the new one is a major upgrade – thin, light, and waterproof — perfect for traveling).

If you know a book nerd —  or are one yourself — consider Kindle Unlimited. I go am able to read so many new releases as well as old favorites because of Kindle Unlimited (you get access to over 1 million ebooks and thousands of audiobooks!).

Recommended Books

The Vanishing Half

A moving story about twin sisters who grow up in a small, southern black community and run away at sixteen. In adulthood, their every existence is different from each other because one sister chooses to pass as a white woman. Years later, the twins’ daughters’ lives intersect and bring the women back together.

Where The Crawdads Sing

I didn’t want this book to end. Check out the author’s background as well. She’s incredible. #GirlCrush

All the Light We Cannot See

Doerr writes with an earnestness that’s raw and emotional. It’s full of vivid imagery and a wonderful reminder that books were written to provide a unique insight into how others think and feel, and live, and love.

Everything I never Told You

Great story of relationships, feeling different from others, teenage angst, and mystery. It’s a dark read but important.

The House of Spirits

Isabel Allende is one of the greatest writers of the past half-century. In The House of Spirits, she creates a family of compelling, quirky, tragic figures operating in South America.

Little Fires Everywhere

Little Fires Everywhere is story of secrets, misunderstandings, and motherhood. When the story ends, you’ll be begging for more. Also, now available on Hulu starring Keri Washington and Reese Witherspoon!

Olive, Again

2nd in the series about Olive Kitteridge. There were times when I didn’t know where this lovely novel was headed, but the whole work is beautiful and moving. You don’t need to read “Olive Kitteridge” first, but I highly recommend it.

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone

People can be hesitant to go to therapy or admit they’ve been. Maybe You Should Talk to Someone is a great introduction to the world of therapists — and what it means to “talk to someone.” HINT: More people go than you’d ever imagine (including me!).

The Hunger Games

Each book in the Hunger Games series is a wonderful quick read of survival and romance all set in a dystopian future.

The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes

Remember Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games books? Well, during her time Coriolanus Snow is the tyrannical president of Panem. But a long time ago, he was just a teenage boy growing up in the Capitol “raised in the shadow of a terrifying rebellion that gave birth to the Hunger Games.” The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is his story.

The Great Alone

There’s a lot of love in this novel: a mother’s love, a friend’s love, a family’s love, romantic love, and dysfunctional love. Set in Alaska, Leni’s story is raw and honest. Get swept up in the descriptions of glaciers and wilderness, stay for the emotionally wrenching roller coaster ride.

Outlander

If you don’t think the time travel romance genre is for you, watch Outlander on Starz. I can almost guarantee that it’ll change your mind. Jamie and Claire’s relationship is one for the ages.
