May 2 – May 9

It has been really hard to get into the swing of things after our trip. Something about the time change on this one just really messed both of us up something severe. Since we got home, we, at one point, had only slept about nine hours in three days.

You’d think a 17-hour difference like Melbourne would be worse, but I tell you, 13 is a beast! Hear me out here. With 17, you’re almost on your normal schedule and it’s like you just had an all-nighter (the flight) the night before.

Thirteen hours, well, that’s a whole different animal. Your schedule is almost completely opposite. For Stranger Things fans, it’s like the Upside Down! You know, it’s probably what people feel like when they work a combo of night and day shifts. Just completely messed up.

Fortunately, we almost never experience jet lag when we arrive at a destination. We’re tired, sure, but when we wake up, we can just drink a little caffeine and be good to go. Our trick is to stay awake until around 10 pm, no matter how tired we are, and when morning comes we’re good as new.

Something that definitely helps me is bringing along some good earplugs (I like these that are 32dB because you won’t hear a thing!). I bring several pairs with me because, darn it, if those buggers aren’t the best at disappearing! City centers can be loud and raucous until all hours of the night…and morning. When you’re out enjoying it, it’s great, but if you want to catch up on some sleep, it’s not ideal.

Tired as we were, I did get a blog post up on this 7 things you just can’t miss in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Check it out!

Let’s Get Real: Traveling With Hashimoto’s

Not that jet lag is easy for anyone, but I have the pleasure of having Hashimoto’s, a thyroid disease caused by low thyroid. If you don’t have thyroid issues, you’ve probably heard of your thyroid, but don’t know much else about it.

This little gland in the neck manages everything from our metabolism and energy levels, growth (hair, nails, bones), stress management (with help from the adrenal glands), muscle and joint strength, and brain function. So, yeah. It’s a pretty important little guy just hanging out there in our necks!

When I was diagnosed eight years ago, I had just started dating Drew. I attributed the constant, overwhelming fatigue and brain fog to lovesickness. (That’s the truth if you can believe it!) I could take a nap, anytime, anywhere. We had fun dates that I couldn’t (and still can’t) remember the details of. It wasn’t until I started getting weird patches on my skin, massive amounts of grey hair, and hair that came out by the fist full that I knew that something was seriously wrong.

Today, there is no function left to my thyroid, everything is artificial. That’s the real bitch of Hashimoto’s; the disease attacks your thyroid until there’s nothing left.

So, why am I sharing this with you? I want you to know that behind our jam-packed itineraries, long nights and early mornings, and Insta-perfect images there’s a really tired chick whose body is super stressed. (And a really supportive husband who gets it.)

If you’re suffering from Hashi’s and the associated adrenal fatigue, I hope that this comes as some encouragement to not let your diagnosis define who you are or the adventures you take.

Golden Knights Clench Round 2

Jet lag aside, we caught an Allegiant flight to San Jose, California and watched our Vegas Golden Knights clench Round 2 of the Stanley Cup playoffs and head into Round 3. Tomorrow’s Predators/Jets game will tell us what team we’ll battle next. I’ve written about my love affair with the Golden Knights in this post and this one. And you can also watch the video below to get a taste of Golden Knights action. Check it out!

Improving Video Skills

I know video is the way that I need to go to help give you a more immersive and emotional experience with our travels. But I honestly have no experience with it! I broke down this week and bought a smartphone gimbal by Smove. The reviews seem to be really positive on its abilities and I’ve really liked the videos I’ve seen shot with it.

Now I need to learn to edit like a pro, right!? Well, if you have any tutorials or tips that come to mind, send them my way! I’m all ears.

So like my wife, Linda, you are on Synthroid for the rest of your life?

Absolutely! I just recently started a combo of Synthroid and Liothyronine because my energy was falling again. From what I understand, it’s a lifelong battle with medication and lifestyle adjustments. How long ago did Linda get diagnosed? Has she found a good level for her meds? Also — let me know she wants some other tips about traveling with Hashi’s. 🙂

She doesn’t have Hashi’s, but had to have her thyroid removed in the 1980’s due to cancer, hence the Synthroid. I wonder how much more you could do if not tired – you two keep a pretty hectic schedule now.

I’m sorry to hear that! So glad she’s doing better now and has such a loving family beside her! ????
